She worked in New York and California, and finally, she contracted tuberculosis helping wounded soldiers after the Battle at Gettysburg in 1863. Her work focused on helping prisoners and the mentally ill get better treatment. She had four children, but only one survived. She had to read in secret, and with only two years of formal education, Eliza became a lecturer and writer. When her mother died, Eliza ended up living with grandfather, whose wife treated her as a servant. Sadie Urbanowicz played Eliza Farnham, who was born in 1815 in New York. Members of the association dressed in character and told the children about the lives of the three women. The morning program was put on March 23 at Chico Women”s Club. In honor of March as Women”s History Month, members of the American Association of University Women, Chico branch, introduced Chico fourth-graders to three women who lived during the Gold Rush era.
